What am I supposed to do next?

Transitioning to adulthood overnight is a lot to handle. Not that long ago, someone else was making sure you had food to eat and a place to live—and now you’re expected to be independent and carry all this responsibility yourself. 

You've done your best to cope, but there's so much to figure out.

How are you going to support yourself financially? Are you going to college? What is it like to have a full-time job, how do you know which is the right one—and how do you even get it? 

All these unknowns feel intimidating, and you may not know what to do. But you’re not alone. 

We can help you find your way through all the questions to a life you’re confident in and excited about.
You don't have to feel like you’re faking how to be an adult. Counseling will help you discover the kind of person you want to be, where you’re going, and how you're going to get there.

Through counseling, you will learn how to: 

  • develop clarity about where you want to go in life

  • create clear action steps so that you're confident about your future

  • learn how to be a source of stability for your friends and family

  • develop resiliency for life's ups and downs

  • move into the life you've always dreamed of

You will benefit most from counseling for transitioning into adulthood if:

  • you’ve graduated high school and are under twenty-five years old

  • you are feeling anxious or overwhelmed about your future

  • you're frustrated or depressed because you don't see how your life can move forward

  • you aren't dealing with a substance addiction

  • you want your life to change

The counseling process:

Therapy will help you clarify what you’re wanting from life and adapt to your changing life and newfound responsibilities. Your therapist will help you with strategies to cope, lead you through practices that help you to adapt to what stresses you and help you transition more easily into adulthood.

 

Each therapy session is 50 minutes long. We recommend at least eight consecutive weeks of therapy to help you work towards your goals and work on your strategies for changing what you can in your life and adapting to what you can’t. It’s not done overnight, it’s a process! We have found that clients who do not commit to weekly sessions for eight weeks struggle to find satisfaction in meeting their goals and regaining control in their lives.

What to Expect

Week 1:

The first week is the intake session. The intake session is focused on helping demystify the counseling process. Your therapist will go through your completed paperwork and make sure that you understand what you are consenting to in therapy. Your therapist will also gather more information about you, your social, biological, and psychological history; and anything else that may be impacting your situation. Your therapist will make sure that we clearly understand your goals for therapy and have a plan moving forward.

Week 2 and the following weeks:

Your therapist will choose treatment strategies that best fit you and help you regain stability in your life. Each session will be focused on the therapist working with you to make sure you feel you are improving. This may require you to practice strategies during your week, between sessions.

Termination:

Termination is the agreed-upon ending of the therapeutic relationship once goals are achieved and takes 1 to 3 sessions, depending on your needs. Therapy should be a springboard into life; your therapist will work with you to determine that you feel your goals have been met and that you are satisfied with what you have worked on.
